just because he is traumatized about a CLEARLY TRAUMATIZING SITUATION
like you are an asshole and you dont know anything
the perfection about shinji is that he’s such a real charcter, hes fucked up, he admits his mistakes,
he’s just put into this situation where he doesnt know what to do and he has the whole entire faith of humanity put on him?? and he’s only 14, he’s been summoned to this weird ass facility by his father who previously abandoned him, and its just a crazy situation for him and you actually see him AFFECTED BY THAT SITUATION instead of jstu being the typical shonen protagonist who is just like hell yeah ill pilot that damn thing
like he has hesitance about the situation like any normal human being would
and as things develop he becomes more developed, you clearly see the strain the whole situation is taking on him, he finds himself depending very deeply on kaworu because he’s the only one whose really invested true niceness to him without asking for anything in return, and then he later finds out he has to kill him because he’s an angel?? like
shit is fucked up
so tl;dr
